Mount Wellington - Tahune Airwalk - Hastings Caves

Start the day traveling skyward from the foothills of Hobart to the summit of Mount Wellington to absorb the majestic views. Heading on south towards the Huon Valley, step out at The Honey Pot for tastings of Tasmania’s unique Leatherwood honey and enjoy seasonal varieties of fresh fruit from the roadside sellers including berries, stone fruits and flavoursome apples. Further south is the quaint township of Franklin, where for those who are curious, a visit to the Wooden Boat Centre to observe the traditional craft of boat building by craftsmen and students is a must. Across the road is Village Antiques, hosting an enormous collection of curios from bygone times. Travel on to Geeveston where you’ll enjoy a variety of lunch options including freshly baked pies and mouthwatering sushi. Visit the furniture design & art centre and speak to local artists who craft specialty gifts and furniture from Tasmanian Timbers. Venture through dense forest before arriving at the Tahune AirWalk before losing yourself amongst the tree tops of the legendary Huon Pine, completely unique to Tasmania. Take a thrilling hang-glide through tall trees and across the river or gently absorb yourself in the beautifully created walks across two swinging bridges rising high above the rushing Huon and Picton Rivers. Check in to your accommodation downriver overlooking the marina at the Kermande Hotel and unwind over a delicious seasonal dinner served up at Sass Restaurant.

After breakfast journey further south to Hastings Caves for a unique underground experience in the large well-lit dolomite caves. Bring your bathers and towel for an optional swim in the Thermal Springs natural hot springs pool after lunch. A little further off the beaten track is the historic rail journey from Lune River to Ida Bay for an unforgettable train ride through Virgin rain forests. Before returning to Hobart complete your southern experience with an afternoon tea stop in Mountain River at My Slice of Pie Cafe, tucked on an Apple and Cherry Orchard proudly farmed for six generations. Savour the flavours of an old fashioned Tasmanian apple pie as your eyes delight in the skyline features of the majestic Sleeping Beauty in the Wellington Ranges.
