From Hobart enjoy a scenic drive southeast to the small coastal fishing village of Dunalley, a special township historically, where Dutch navigator Abel Tasman first landed in 1642. Perched beside the hand-made canal is the quirky Fish Market popular for its freshly shucked oysters and friendly seal who’s often seen languishing nearby. Further down the Tasman highway is Hillcrest Berries strawberry farm at Eaglehawk Neck and a superb photo opportunity of breathtaking views across Pirates Bay from the Tasman Seacliff Coast lookout. Enjoy a heavenly tasting of locally made sweets at Federation Chocolate before arriving at Port Arthur Historic Site with plenty of time to walk amongst the ruins and museum, absorbing the regions dark and troubled convict history, including a voyage to the Isle of the Dead. A visit to the dramatic Remarkable Caves completes the afternoon before checking in to your accommodation and then after dinner the brave hearted may seize the rare chance for a guided Ghost tour of the Historic Site by lantern light.

Adventure out after breakfast with Pennicott Wilderness Journeys on an optional Wildlife Eco Cruise to Tasman Island and observe sea life. Chat with Bill, a local whiskey distiller before travelling to a small fishing village at Nubeena for lunch. Further along the Convict trail discover the ruins of an isolated Coal Mine at Saltwater River, home to some spooky underground convict cells. Visit the ruins of the nearby Convict Gaol at Koonya where you’ll uncover an intimate collection of artifacts before navigating on to quirky Doo Town and the renowned geological features at Eaglehawk Neck. Enjoy views of the Tessellated pavement, Blowhole, Tasman Arch and Devils Kitchen and weather permitting, an afternoon stroll or swim at Pirates Bay beach before returning to Hobart.
